I'll raise my kids my way
There are so many articles linked to Facebook about what you can or cannot tell your kids. Don't tell your daughters they are beautiful because then they wont try to be smart. Don't tell your kids they are doing a subpar job of their chores, use only positive reinforcement. Don't, for the love of God, ever spank your kid and especially not in public. Make sure you tell your sons how to be cool, and classy and outdoorsy with a little bit of nerd... I mean, good grief. How does a mom keep up these days? You read one article and then the next completely contradicts the first. I think it's time to put down the phone and just raise my kids the same way my parents raised me. They were sarcastic. They teased me. They told me if my grades sucked and punished me instead of yelling at my teachers. In short, they were awesome. I mean, just look at me!! LOL!! But seriously, I think my parents modeled themselves after the show Roseanne. They were sarcastic and funny but you knew they loved you. I'll just stick to that mold. I tell my daughters everyday that they are beautiful because they are. I tell them how proud of them I am when they do something exceptionally smart and I also tell them when I am disappointed in how dumb they're being. Fashionista gets this way more than Exhibitionist because she is still a baby but you get my point. The real world isn't going to coddle you and tell you that you are doing a great job even if you suck. It's up to us as parents to tell our kids so they can try harder. We live in St. Louis and today they announced that the grand jury has reached a verdict about officer Wilson. Buildings have been boarded up, streets have been shut down, schools have been cancelled and parents have gotten terrifying messages saying to come pick up their kids asap due to the impending verdict release. There have been threats of violence, two men were caught by the FBI for trying to plant pipe bombs. It's like we live in a war zone. I can't help but think if Michael Brown's mother had instilled in her son the same values, we wouldn't be having all these problems. Stealing is wrong. Grabbing an officers gun isn't going to get you anything but shot. Period. Maybe if she spanked his butt as a kid he wouldn't have thought he was entitled to whatever he wanted in that convenience store. So for now, I'll just be over here spanking bottoms, giving kisses and telling my kids how lucky they are to have me as a mom!
